In 2004 the sculptural bookcase Sendai was born as a collaboration between the 2013 Pritzker Prize winner Toyo Ito and Italian furniture company Horm. Nine years later after the successful collaboration, Horm presents a new glass version that still reflects Toyo Ito’s design philosophy.
The sculptural piece captures the essence of the Sendai Mediatheque in Japan which Toyo Ito designed himself. The Sendai Crystal consists of six light glass shelves connected through turned elements of solid wood. The twenty-five turned wood elements resemble the steel lattice columns Toyo Ito used in the Sendai Mediatheque.
Positioned at different angles, the elements vary in diameter and are made from solid alder and walnut, treated with oil. The black lacquered MDF plinth with adjustable feet grounds the light airy structure.
