i29 interior architects joined forces with VMX Architects once again, after collaborating in the past for social workplace Combiwerk. Designed for media agency MediaXplain, Office 05 seamlessly integrates architecture and interior design. The office is location in an industrial building in de Houthavens, at the Old Port of Amsterdam.
The design of the building reflects the intertwining of the old and new city, and the harbour. VMX Architects took advantage of the building’s location with a completely open facade that oversees the water and docks. To achieve this, the architects set glass on the facade on an angle (as in a ship’s wheelhouse) to cancel out the reflections of the glass.
The interior of the building also reflects the industrial origin of this area, with an open plan office with a large open space at the centre of the building. i29 interior architects proposed a design that integrates industrial materials such as rough oak wood, black surface walls and furniture, custom designed concrete carpets, grey acoustic ceilings, and a large industrial staircase to connect both office floors.
The front of the office space incorporates large desks made of rough oak wood that overlook the port. The back of the office features private offices, meeting rooms, print area and pantry. The spaces are connected by a long corridor finished in black walls, ceiling and floor, that spans across the full width of the building.
Seen from the main office area, this corridor operates as a cinema with large projection walls for the display of digital work, referring to the clients activities as a media agency.
i29 interior architects stands for a work ethic that leads to design solutions dependent neither on expensive materials nor on technical show. We look for choices that answer to multiple questions at the same time. The integration of both the industrial environment as well as the clients identity as a media agency tells a conceptual story about the company, the space and it’s users.
