Hong Kong based firm AB Concept, reflects and reinterprets Shanghai’s contemporary glamour, boldness and elegance in the design of Shàng-Xí, the Chinese restaurant within Four Seasons Hotel Pudong, Shanghai. Wanting to capture the sense of place and offer a fresh perspective, AB Concept took inspiration from Shanghai’s rich history, by combining “the architectural forms of Shanghai’s French concession with traditional Chinese symbols”.
By reinterpreting the neoclassical style, Shàng-Xí suggests European opulence through its soaring ceilings, bronze finishes and marble interiors. The designers, introduce throughout the restaurant shapes and colours that hint at oriental glamour, as well as Deco-inspired furniture to reveal a timeless elegance.
The reception of the restaurant features beige parchment panels complemented by bold bronze accents and jade inserts. Shàng-Xí offers five private dining rooms, as well as an intimate space for 22 guests. Drawing inspiration from Chinese cultural icons, AB Concept designed each room based on the colours and properties of semi-precious stones. Each room (Tiger Eye, Pearl, Amber, Agate, Jade and Purple Jade) distinguishes itself through its colour palette and design narrative.
Accommodating 22 guests, Tiger Eye, is the largest of the dining areas. Taking full advantage of the floor-to-ceiling windows, the dining space offers a breathtaking view of the city. Cloud shaped chandelier, marble pillars and texture carpets introduce a sense of elegant formality that is reminiscent of classic French design.
The Pearl dining room introduces a more masculine theme through dark wood and heavy velvets. The Amber and Agate dining rooms have a capacity of up to 10 guests. Both rooms express a timeless elegance, introducing shades of gold with timber accents to project vitality and natural energy. The Jade and Purple Jade rooms both convey serenity, prosperity and grace.
As purple is the rarest colour of jade, this spacious room is suitably opulent with its rich fabrics, eclectic artifacts and a striking custom-made light fixture that evokes Deco style.
Guided by privacy, luxury and timeless elegance, AB Concept transformed Shàng-Xi’s six private dining rooms to be Shanghai’s premier venues for high-powered lunches, exclusive gatherings and intimate celebrations.
