Gregory Phillips Architects designed the building, interiors and landscaping of this substantial modern country house along the banks of the River Thames in Berkshire. The design was inspired by traditional country houses with adjoining stable yards, creating a seamless connection between the indoors and the surrounding landscape.
The impressive views of the landscape become evident upon the entry of the house itself. The formal entrance is made by crossing an enclosed reflecting pool leading into a double-height space, from here the building is predominantly glazed to face the far-reaching north-western views with terracing at each level.
The gardens incorporate an infinity edged swimming pool and a tennis court, whilst the landscaping follows a simple, semi-formal layout leading to the extensive grounds and open-countryside beyond.
The interior design never loses connection with the outdoors. Large windows and sliding doors keep the connection vivid, flooding the interior with natural light. The balconies and roof terraces at first floor further reinforce links to the landscape. The key rooms that face the views are the main bedroom and bathroom.
Chinese basalt stone floor throughout the main recreation areas gives the impression of a seamless transition between internal and external spaces. The muted colour palette creates a sense of tranquility and elegance against the vibrant landscape colours.
The incredible view is truly amplified in the main ensuite bathroom. The full height Statuaria marble-clad walls and bath, along with sleek stainless steel accessories create a spa-like experience.
Luxurious fabrics and materials enrich the house with textural aspects such as animal-hide walls, basalt floors and sofas upholstered in the most opulent of silks. An incredible selection of materials that remains sympathetic to the magnificent views of the valley. Christian Liaigre furniture has been selected throughout the entire house, adding a playful touch to the overall neutral colour palette.
The residence is nothing short of jaw-dropping moments. The Berkshire residence exceeded the clients’ expectations and provided them with a luxurious, contemporary family home full of clean lines, natural light and sumptuous furnishings and fabrics.
