Benedetta Tagliabue / EMBT has designed an intricate sculptural pendant for Spanish brand Bover. Inspired by the domes of the Renaissance, the Dome pendant takes reference from historical buildings such as Basilica Mercè in Barcelona, the Pantheon in Rome, the dome Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence and dome of St. George in Venice.
The hanging lamp is entirely handmade of more than 170 puzzled wood pieces in beech veneer finish. Just like jigsaw puzzles, the large and small wood fragments are intertwined and sewed one by one to create an astonishing presence.
The light plays with the complex geometry of Dome, creating innumerable designs of light and shadows, which accompany this lightweight lamp, yet big format. The LED light is placed above the wooden structure to illuminate throughout the open and diffused portions casting beautiful shadow patterns on surfaces below.
With DOME we decided to take the light out of the object so it becomes a light sculpture designed to receive and emit a delicate light, a play of shadows and nuances that enrich the space for which they were created. Developing this project with Benedetta has allowed us to reflect on the art of lighting, on how to reinterpret light and on the creation of products with a more artistic approach and a less industrial look. It has also allowed us to be swept away and do what we really like to do.
