Vibeke Fonnesberg Schmidt designed a sculptural DIY hanging lamp for Danish design company Normann Copenhagen. Bau was designed as a unique combination of colour, composition and geometric shapes, making it ideal for both minimalistic interiors, as well as more eclectic ones. Bau comes in two different versions: a multi-coloured version, and a Nature (monochromatic) version.
The unique design is based on interlocking geometric circles, sticking out in all directions. As with most of Vibeke Fonnesberg Schmidt’s designs, Bau reflects her love for architecture. In German, Bau means construction, a perfect name for a lamp that puts emphasis on construction and composition.
Geometric forms have always been the starting points for my pieces. I think construction and composition are important to the end result, and I am constantly challenging myself by breaking away from existing boundaries. I want the observer to experience something – thus making the object come alive.
The Bau lamp embraces the DIY (Do It Yourself) concept, as users have to assemble their own lamps. The lamp comes packed in 14 bags of round pieces, in various colours and sizes, inviting users to create a pattern, which at first appears random.
Decoration does not need to be restricted to objects you hang on the wall, but can also form an integral part of more functional objects, such as a table or a lamp. This creates new and exciting opportunities in furnishing. When you move your position in relation to Bau, the tight geometric lines are broken. The sort of experience I want people to have is to see the Bau lamp and wonder what it looks like from the other side. It must appeal to peoples’ sense of curiosity.
